We seek a candidate who is pursuing transformative research in global environmental change through innovation in remote sensing. The ideal candidate will build an externally funded research program in remote sensing that complements and contributes to our research strengths in geographic information science and global environmental change. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in research, an openness to interdisciplinary collaboration, and will establish a vibrant graduate research group. They will show the clear promise of excellence in teaching cutting-edge undergraduate and graduate courses in remote sensing. The ability to teach Physical Geography courses is an asset. We seek candidates who will contribute positively and constructively to the department work environment and will participate in collegial governance and community building.

The Department of Geography was a founding member of the University back in 1965 and has since become one of the strongest Geography departments in North America. We rank 7th of all Geography departments in Canada (5th in citations per paper), and 2nd amongst Canadian comprehensive universities in the 2015 QS World University Rankings. We currently number 22 research and teaching faculty, amongst them Canada Research Chairs, Michael Smith Scholars, Fellows of the Canadian Geographical Society, SFU excellence in teaching awardees, and other award holders. We have >50 graduate students in the MA, MSc and PhD programs who are collaborating on research projects with our faculty and ~500 undergraduate student majors enrolled in BA and BSc programs. We also offer Certificates in Urban Studies and Spatial Information Science, experiential learning through co-op, fieldtrips and community collaborations, and our BSc program fulfils the curricular requirements for Professional Environmental Geoscience and Professional Agrologist accreditation.
