Job Details

The Physical Oceanography Department is currently searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join their team. This is a temporary, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits. The initial appointment will be for 1 year with possible six-month continuation contingent on progress and funding.

JOB SUMMARY:

Postdoctoral position in Deep Circulation of the Gulf of Mexico at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

The institution has a top-rated postdoctoral program (www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral/) that supports a dynamic postdoctoral community with formal mentoring and career guidance programs. While the primary focus of the work will be in research, the postdoctoral investigator will have an opportunity to participate in educational and outreach activities associated with the project.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

We are seeking a highly motivated, organized, and independent physical oceanographer for a postdoctoral investigator position at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The postdoc will work with a team of researchers on a funded project, Deep Water Dispersion Experiment,” the goal of which is to describe and understand variability in the circulation of the western Gulf of Mexico, as well as the characteristics of particle dispersion at upper-ocean and intermediate depths.

The candidate should have strong skills in the analysis of physical oceanographic observations (with preference for experience in the analysis of Lagrangian data) and numerical model output, and have expertise in meso-scale and large-scale ocean dynamics. The successful applicant will analyze a new rich Lagrangian data set consisting of about 90 long-term RAFOS float trajectories to develop a better description of the boundary current system in the western Gulf of Mexico, the roles of boundary-interior exchange processes, Loop current Rings, topographic Rossby waves, and coherent vortices. A second RAFOS float data set collected during 2011-2015 covering the entire Gulf is also available. The postdoc is expected to include dynamical models as well as numerical model output where appropriate to extend the interpretation of the observations, and collaborate with the co-PI at CICESE in Mexico.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Opportunities will be available to travel to CICESE for collaboration, but this is not required.
  • As deemed necessary by supervisor

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Ph.D. in Oceanography, with experience in physical oceanography
  • Required technical skills include substantial experience with the analysis and interpretation of physical oceanographic data and model output, and programming languages including MatLab. The initial appointment will be for 1 year with possible 6-month continuation contingent on progress and funding. Informal inquiries should be addressed to Dr. Amy Bower (abower@whoi.edu).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, distinguish basic colors as well as visual abilities to include near, far, and peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear, talk, travel, work around others as well as alone. This position is continuously sedentary. Physical duties are subject to change.
