Supports the Applied Research Center (ARC) in the development, evaluation and deployment of innovative technologies that support the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) soil and groundwater remediation program under the DOE-FIU Cooperative Agreement. Manages and leads the Applied Research Center's hydrology modeling team consisting of research analysts and specialists, post-doctoral associates as well as undergraduate and graduate students in conducting research on projects focused on the development and utilization of hydrology models for environmental management and planning.

  • Provides the management, coordination, control of activities, communications and budget for multiple programs with multiple ARC clients on the appropriate research programs and technical projects.
  • Identifies opportunities and submits proposals for external funding.
  • Serves as task manager and leads proposal development efforts in excess of $750,000 annually.
  • Publishes peer reviewed journal and publication (proceedings) and/or presents research findings annually at the national and international levels to enhance the scientific stature of the Applied Research Center (ARC).
  • Supervises staff and mentors students.
  • Coordinates with university research faculty and staff on related projects and programs.
  • Develops teaming relationships to assist university-wide initiatives with support of ARC Senior Leadership.
  • Serves as Center's primary point of contact with applicable federal agencies/private industry, contractors, etc., on expanding business opportunities as directed. Provides leadership in the development and implementation of new programs and contracts.
  • Monitors and stays abreast of federal, state, local government and commercial technical programs and associated related technical programs.
  • Provides assistance in area of expertise with regards to specific contracts, proposals and related documentation as directed.
  • Utilizes expertise in hydrology and physicochemical methods to achieve the Center's research commitments.
  • Serves as ARC¿s Soil and Groundwater Lead for projects involving simulations of watershed hydrology, water management scenarios and solute transport (contaminants, nutrients) using DHI MIKE software and other commercial and open source models.
  • Provides oversight of the collection, compilation, analysis, and management of spatial and temporal data using ESRI ArcGIS products and tools.
  • Oversees and stays abreast on expertise in water quality and watershed management.
  • Develops and applies conceptual and numerical models of surface and subsurface hydrology.
  • Obtains and analyzes hydrologic data from various sources. Conducts field research which involves but is not limited to remote and in situ data collection and collection of water, soil or sediment samples.
  • Analyzes and summarizes data, presents research results at conferences and publishes in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Trains, supervises and mentors undergraduate and graduate students. Works effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Participates in the development of proposals for additional funding in relevant research areas.
  • Assists in the development of publications, technical reports, monthly, quarterly and year end reports

Minimum Qualification:

  • Doctoral degree and five (5) years of relevant experience or equivalent in training and/or experience.

Departmental Requirements:

  • Experience running hydrologic simulations using commercial and open source software.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong and demonstrated experience in studying surface water flow, groundwater flow, and solute transport. Working knowledge of GIS and remote sensing techniques.
  • Experience in proposal developing and identifying funding opportunities.
