Assistant Professor of Environmental Science

The Department of Environmental Science and Policy invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Environmental Science to begin in August 2020. We are seeking an individual who will complement existing strengths in earth and life sciences within the department. The ideal candidate will have expertise in the study and conservation of fish or wildlife, and preferably utilize the Hudson River as a teaching and research system. Specialties of interest include, but are not limited to, conservation ecology/biology, habitat restoration, landscape/watershed ecology, and coupled natural-human systems interactions. An interdisciplinary approach that takes advantage of diverse collaborators at Marist and throughout the region is encouraged.

Minimum Qualifications:

Earned doctorate from an accredited university and teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

Essential Functions:

The primary responsibilities for this position are undergraduate course instruction and advising undergraduate student research. Courses to be taught are dependent upon expertise, complementing existing courses and development of a new departmental curriculum. The normal course load is 3:4 (including labs); reductions may be provided during the first year, for high levels of research activity or certain administrative and service duties. Applicants are to have an active research agenda that includes direct involvement of students, with expectations for peer reviewed publications.

Preferred Qualifications:

Abilities with GIS are highly desirable.

About the Department

The curriculum emphasizes experiential education through field-oriented and project-based coursework, internships and research. Students choose between two concentrations: science and policy. The department will build upon these features as we embark upon a redesign of the curriculum and add an Environmental Studies major. The successful candidate will be actively involved in this redesign process. Additional department information can be found at: marist.edu/science/environmental-science-policy

Resources available for teaching and research include a campus lab along the Hudson River with capacity for flow-through river water experimentation, and a 28-foot research vessel for field-based observation. Our waterfront also houses a real-time physio-chemical river monitoring system operated by USGS partners. The north end of campus is occupied by the 13-acre Fern Tor Nature Preserve, containing two small tributaries to the Hudson River, a pond, mixed hardwood forest and trail system. Colleagues and facilities within the School of Science enable advanced biological and chemical analyses. Collaborations exist with the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, 25 minutes from campus. Additional field sites are utilized within the surrounding Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains.
