Job Details

The Environmental Studies Program at Hamilton College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Environmental Data Science at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2020.  We seek candidates whose teaching and research emphasizes big data and/or spatial approaches to the study of pressing global environmental issues and who will contribute to the cluster hire of additional faculty for the strategic Digital Hamilton initiative. Candidates may come from any disciplinary or interdisciplinary background in the sciences.  The successful candidate will demonstrate their expertise in digital and/or computational approaches to environmental data science and the ability to develop an active research program that can contribute toward cross-disciplinary conversations.  The hire will play a critical role in teaching courses in Hamilton’s rapidly growing Environmental Studies Program, and will be expected to develop and teach a data science or applied statistics course, as well as a course on digital spatial data (e.g. GIS) with environmental applications that both employ digital pedagogy and technologies.  Additional courses might include an environmental research design course, as well as other courses in their area of expertise. The teaching load for this position is four courses during the first academic year and five courses thereafter.  The position requires institutional service including academic advising of undergraduate students after the first year.

We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate their experience in teaching or working with diverse student populations.  Your cover letter should address ways in which issues of diversity are brought into your teaching, scholarship, and/or service.

Candidates who are ABD will be considered, although candidates with a Ph.D. are preferred. Candidates should submit (1) A cover letter that addresses their qualifications for the position, (2) a statement describing their teaching philosophy; (3) a statement of their research interests, (4) a curriculum vitae; and (5) a list of three potential references who know the candidate well and understand the expectations of a competitive liberal arts college.  Candidates should submit materials via Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/66753.  Questions regarding the search may be directed to Todd Rayne, Search Committee Chair, at trayne@hamilton.edu.  Our review of applications will begin on October 1, 2019.
