Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Urban Data Science

The UCLA Department of Urban Planning invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position. We seek a bold, innovative thinker who is, or soon will be, a leading scholar of cities and regions. We are looking for applicants who use new data sources and data science methods to visualize and analyze pressing economic, environmental, social, transportation, or urban development issues at scales ranging from local to global. The candidate selected must be able to contribute substantially to both teaching urban data science and expanding the Luskin School’s data science capacities, which include urban informatics, spatial analytics, machine learning, data economics and regulation, computational social science, and so on, as well as offer critical perspectives on their application to policy and city planning and design. This position is part of a larger investment in big data analytics, new technologies, and cyber infrastructure in the Luskin School of Public Affairs, in the UCLA College, and across the UCLA campus.

The Department of Urban Planning currently hosts 18 tenured/tenure-track planning faculty, 6 affiliated tenured/tenure-track faculty, 7 long-term adjunct/practice faculty, 3 active professors emeriti, 35 PhD students, 150 master’s students, and a growing number of undergraduate majors. We have a tradition of intellectual leadership in urban studies and planning, and our students and alumni have long been known for their passionate commitment to progressive planning ideals.

Los Angeles is a global city renowned for its dynamism, robust economy, rich cultural diversity, and spectacular climate. The generously endowed Luskin School of Public Affairs is home to the departments of Public Policy, Social Welfare, and Urban Planning, as well as eight research centers, all of which support faculty research: the California Policy Lab, Census Data Research Center, Center for Policy Research on Aging, Institute on Inequality and Democracy, Institute of Transportation Studies, Latino Politics and Policy Initiative, Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies, and the Luskin Center for Innovation.

The University of California actively seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to serve the people of California, to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning.

UCLA offers competitive salary and attractive benefits packages, including a housing assistance program for new faculty members. All applicants should hold a PhD at the time of appointment and demonstrate exceptional promise for scholarship and teaching. While we expect to appoint at the rank of Assistant Professor, we will consider applicants and appointments at the Associate level.

To apply, please submit (1) a brief cover letter, (2) a research statement of less than 500 words highlighting scholarly contributions of recent research and plans for the near future, (3) one publication or writing sample that best represents your work, (4) a statement of less than 500 words that describes your approach to teaching, lists undergraduate and graduate courses you could teach, and briefly describes one of these courses, and (5) a statement that addresses past and/or potential contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion. You should also ask three referees who know you and your work well to submit letters of recommendation on your behalf.

The expected start date is July 1, 2020. All materials must be submitted via UCLA Academic Recruit by October 15, 2019, to be guaranteed full consideration.
