Phd and Postdoctoral positions in paleoceanography, environmental oceanography or biogeochemistry

The Environmental Geochemistry and Oceanography research group at the University of Hong Kong invites applications for a PhD-student position in paleoceanography, environmental oceanography or biogeochemistry.

The precise subject of the thesis will be decided upon agreement between the candidate and the supervisor and will depend on the candidate interests and strengths and the research interest of the group, which include paleoceanography, trace element in marine carbonates, nitrogen cycle (past and present) and marine pollution.

Suggested research topic (not exclusive):

  • Plastic and microplastic pollution
  • Use of compound-specific stable isotope in environmental science and paleoceanography
  • Blue Carbon storage in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia
  • Past change in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (Holocene, MIS 5e, MIS 11, etc)

We encourage applications from enthusiastic and self-motivated students who have demonstrated academic and research excellence in environmental or earth sciences, chemistry, or a related quantitative discipline. Applicants should have a 1stclass honors degree or a 2.1 honors degree plus Masters (or equivalent). Experience in geochemistry, paleoceanography and/or mass spectrometry is considered an asset.

For postdoctoral positions, the successful applicants will be supported in their application to the HKU Presidential postdoctoral fellowship (https://www.hku.hk/research/hku-ppf.html) and/or the RGC postdoctoral fellowship scheme (https://www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/rgc/funding_opport/pdfs/nomination.html).
