Job Details

Title:  Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Environmental Sustainability

Effective Date of Appointment:  August 16, 2020; 9-month, continuing appointment.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess an earned doctorate in Geography, Geology, or a closely related field.  All degree requirements must be met by August 15, 2020.  Applicants must show evidence of relevant teaching and research, including peer-reviewed publication. Applicants must have a professional record that establishes their external funding history and/or potential.  Preference will be given to applicants with a focus on applied research in sustainability science that complements existing strengths in the School of Earth Systems and Sustainability.  Post-doctoral experience is preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include the following: teaching a mix of undergraduate and graduate courses, which may include introductory and advanced courses in sustainability, and other topics in the candidate's area of expertise; service on M.S. and Ph.D. student committees; maintaining an active and successful research program that includes external research support; and appropriate service.

The School: The School of Earth Systems and Sustainability is a newly formed school affiliated with the College of Science and houses programs in Geography and Environmental Resources (geography.siu.edu) and Geology (geology.siu.edu)  The school offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Geography and Environmental Resources, Geology and two doctoral degrees (Environmental Resources and Policy and Geosciences).  Areas of study at the undergraduate and graduate levels include: Climate and Water Resources, Environmental Geology, Environmental Sustainability, Geographic Information Science, Geophysics, and Resource Geology.  Located in the forested Shawnee Hills, 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a Carnegie Doctoral Research University (high research activity).
