Research Activity:

The Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET) in cooperation of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and Physics Department of UMBC seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate. The research scope of this position is to advance the understanding of desert dust cycle and its interactions with the energy, water, and carbon cycles of the Earth system through integrating satellite observations and model simulations. Successful applicant will focus research on one of several projects, including (a) investigating the interannual to decadal variability of atmospheric dust, (b) quantifying the dust long-range transport and deposition, (c) assessing the dust direct radiative effects, and (d) studying dust-cloud interactions and the consequential impacts on weather and climate. The initial appointment will be for one (1) year period, with a possibility for extension of additional 1-2 years depending on satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience.

Qualifications: The successful applicant should have a recent PhD degree in atmospheric sciences or physics with strong background in atmospheric radiation, aerosol/cloud physics, and/or satellite remote sensing. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in research related directly to atmospheric dust, as well as the ability to handle large datasets from polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites. Experience with dust modeling is a plus. The successful applicant must be proficient with UNIX/Linux systems and computer programming languages such as Python, FORTRAN 90, and IDL. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. The selection is contingent upon possessing appropriate visa status to meet requirements for employment.

For best consideration, submit electronically a cover letter (indicating the specific position number above), a complete curriculum vitae, home address, visa status (if applicable), names, emails, and telephone numbers of three (3) references preferably by November 1, 2019 (although applications for this position will be accepted until the position is filled) to: Belay Demoz (bdemoz@umbc.edu), Director, JCET, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Suite 320, 5523 Research Park Drive, Baltimore, MD 21228. UMBC is an Equal Employment/Affirmative Action employer.
