Assistant Professor of Environmental Science
 

Salary and Terms: Full-time, nine month tenure-track position. Salary placement is based on education and experience.

Position Description: The Environmental Science program at Southwest Minnesota State University is seeking applications for a broadly-trained scientist with expertise in environmental hydrology or water resource sciences emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach to water, soil, and air interactions and who will play a key role in refocusing and updating the program's current curriculum. The position's primary responsibilities include:

  • Teaching the introductory Environmental Science course and labs
  • Teaching Research Methods and supervising undergraduate research projects
  • Teaching upper-level hydrology courses and potential courses in one or more of the following areas: Remote Sensing, Climate Change, Environmental Monitoring, Geospatial Analysis, or related topics
  • Involvement in curriculum changes to the program
  • Preference given to candidates who have experience in computational environmental science using databases to analyze and model systems at different scales across a variety of disciplines.

Additional responsibilities include active participation in activities that support the Environmental Science program and Science department, including student advising and service on campus committees. Faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly and creative activity, continuing preparation and study, contributing to student growth and development, and service to the University and community.

Qualifications:

  • D. in hydrology, environmental science, water resource science, geoscience, atmospheric science, or related fields. ABD will be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach at the undergraduate level.
  • Demonstrated commitment or proven strategies for fostering a diverse and inclusive environment; demonstrated ability or proven strategies to teach and work with persons from diverse backgrounds is required.
  • Ability and willingness to engage students in undergraduate research inside or outside of a formal class setting.
  • Student-centered approach to education and a commitment to helping grow the Environmental Science program.
  • Demonstrated abilities/competence in instructional technology.
  • Must have an understanding and appreciation for liberal education.

Preferred:

  • Online instruction and commitment to interdisciplinary education is preferred.
  • Competence in science pedagogy is desirable.

*Nine Month Appointments- Along with all other Universities that are part of the Minnesota State system, standard faculty appointments are for 168 duty days distributed over any nine consecutive months.
