The Department of Liberal Arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the field of environmental chemistry, beginning August 2020. Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions and are commensurate with quality of practice, scholarship, academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.

DEPARTMENT PROFILE

The Department of Liberal Arts provides the academic foundation for undergraduate student success within SAIC’s interdisciplinary art and design curriculum. The department is chaired by a full-time faculty member with 16 full-time faculty and over 100 part-time faculty. The department offers 400 courses each year, primarily to undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art. Liberal Arts’ main credit areas include First Year Seminar, Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Science, Foreign Languages, English for International Students, and the Academic Access Program. Within the Science area, faculty teach courses in mathematics, biology, geology, physics and climate science. RESPONSIBILITIES

Faculty in the Liberal Arts Department teach and advise undergraduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. The successful candidate will design and teach topics within the areas of chemistry and environmental science. Future duties could include coordinating the science curriculum within the department, scheduling and staffing science courses, and/or serving as department chair.  The faculty member will teach in areas that contribute to the general goals of the department as well as in their area of specialization; take a leadership role in forging the future of the department; participate in student advising, admissions events, committee work, and special projects; contribute to the SAIC community through ongoing curricular development; and participate in departmental administration and school governance.  

QUALIFICATIONS

A Ph.D. in Chemistry (atmospheric chemistry, soil science, environmental chemistry, etc.), environmental science, or related field of study is required. Candidates must show evidence of substantial college/university teaching experience within their area of study as well as a record of robust and ongoing research/scholarship. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration.
