Job Details

The School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) and the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SoMSS) at Arizona State University invite applications for a joint appointment as tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in space physics to begin August 2020.  We encourage applications from a diverse range of candidates who approach space physics from varied perspectives, including theory, analysis, observation, and/or instrument development.  Examples of research and teaching areas of interest include solar processes, space plasma physics, ionospheric dynamics, space weather and its impact on technological systems, or the general heliophysical environment and its response to solar events, as well as data analysis, computation, or engineering methods used to enable the study of space physics.

An essential characteristic of the academic environment at ASU is integration of research and teaching across traditional disciplinary boundaries.  We seek someone who would be excited to catalyze research and educational collaborations with other faculty and groups.  Existing areas of research emphasis at ASU that may present opportunities for collaboration include star-planet connections in exoplanetary systems, stellar models, planetary atmospheres and magnetism, ionospheric data modeling, resilient computing and microwave communications systems, and small satellite and instrument development.

About ASU, SESE, and SoMSS

ASU is ranked #1 in innovation by US News and World Report.  Spread across four main campuses in the Phoenix metropolitan region, it is the nation’s largest public university with over 100,000 students enrolled, including 35,000 online students.  ASU has an inclusive and diverse student community reflective of the U.S. population.  Read more about ASU at http://www.asu.edu and http://newamericanuniversity.asu.edu/about.

The College values our cultural and intellectual diversity, and continually strives to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment. We are especially interested in applicants who can strengthen the diversity of the academic community.  Learn more about what The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has to offer by visiting https://thecollege.asu.edu/faculty.

SESE brings together all of Earth and space science at ASU, including geology, planetary science, astrophysics, and cosmology.   A central part of the SESE mission is to develop new technologies to enable scientific exploration.  SESE leads the NASA Psyche mission and is participating in Lucy, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, Mars 2020, Mars Odyssey, Mars Exploration Rovers, OSIRIS-REx, SPHEREx, and EMIRS, as well as balloon-borne missions STO-2, GUSTO, BLAST-TNG, TIM, EXCLAIM, and ASTHROS.  SESE researchers lead cubesats LunaH-Map and SPARCS and collaborate on the development of ground-based radio telescopes HERA, MWA, and OVRO-LWA.  ASU is a partner in the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) and ASU faculty and scientists have access to the Arizona telescope system, including the Magellan telescopes in Chile and the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona.  SESE faculty benefit from a variety of state-of-the-art facilities on the Tempe campus, including technology-enabled classrooms, high-bay assembly clean rooms, thermal-vacuum facilities, spaceflight qualified machine shops, and a ground-station to communicate with spacecraft.  Read more about SESE at https://sese.asu.edu.

SoMSS conducts programs of research and instruction in the broad areas of applied and theoretical mathematics, statistics and mathematics education.  SoMSS is heavily involved in interdisciplinary research with engineering, life science, and medical science, as well as in atmospheric dynamics and weather modeling, including effects of weather on agriculture, tracking air-borne pollutants, and modeling electromagnetic radiation as it passes through the atmosphere.  Recent research efforts focus on combining data-driven and physics-predictive modeling techniques with applications to ionospheric dynamics and space weather.  Read more about SoMSS at https://math.asu.edu.

Essential Duties:

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vibrant externally-funded research program, engage undergraduate and graduate students through effective teaching and mentoring, participate in service to the university and profession, and build productive relationships with faculty both within and beyond the Schools.  The successful candidate will join existing SESE and SoMSS faculty in developing new courses in space physics to offer to students at ASU and/or online, as well as in sharing the excitement, process, and results of scientific exploration with the local community and public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in theoretical, computational, mathematical, and/or statistical modeling, or in observations, data analysis, and/or instrumentation for space physics or in related disciplines that can be applied to the study of space physics.
  • Evidence of scholarly contributions in space physics or related disciplines such as plasma physics, astrophysics, heliophysics, space weather, atmospheric studies of the ionosphere or magnetosphere, or electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering.
  • Doctorate in physics, astrophysics, geophysical or atmospheric sciences, mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science, or other related field by the time of application submission.
  • Demonstrated potential to establish an externally-funded research program.
  • A commitment to quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success or evidence of commitment to meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or engaging diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated success or evidence of commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Experience in curriculum, course, and/or degree development and evaluation.
  • A research focus with the potential to advance the mission of the University.
