The Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position focusing on risk- and decision-analysis to inform climate risk management. The successful candidate will join a transdisciplinary research team supported by funding from sponsors including NSF, DOE, and NOAA. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in a relevant discipline such as applied mathematics, statistics, atmospheric science, geosciences, civil and environmental engineering, or operations research. A Ph.D. in a relevant field is required. The Postdoctoral Scholar will have considerable freedom to collaboratively design the research within the scope of projects relevant to the team's efforts. Example projects include: analysis of the dynamics of coupled natural-human systems with the associated deep and dynamic uncertainties, quantification of climate hazards, quantification of trade-offs associated with adaptation to and mitigation of climate change, and applying and refining methods for many-objective robust decision making. Examples of current projects and relevant publications are provided at https://personal.ems.psu.edu/~kzk10/. This position provides unique opportunities for research, education, outreach, decision support, and professional development, as well as mentoring by a team of experts in relevant disciplines. To apply for this position, please upload a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, reprints of two manuscripts, and contact information for three professional references as a single PDF file. The cover letter should explain the applicant's interest in the position, highlight relevant qualifications and experience, and include links to examples of relevant prior work. Applicants should also provide evidence, either woven through their application materials, or as a separate diversity statement, of a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence and engagement in their work environment. Review of applications will begin immediately, and the position will remain open until filled. This is a fixed-term position funded for one year from the date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding. Questions regarding the position should be directed to Dr. Klaus Keller (klaus@psu.edu). The Pennsylvania State University's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences takes an active role in building a talented, inclusive, and culturally competent workforce. We understand that our shared future is guided by basic principles of fairness, mutual respect, and commitment to each other. Applicants should provide evidence, either woven through their application materials or as a separate diversity statement, of a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusive excellence, and belonging and of engagement which creates an inclusive environment in their department/workplace.
