Chair, Department of Geosciences, Tenure-track Faculty

Middle Tennessee State University invites applications for an innovative leader to chair the Department of Geosciences. The Department offers baccalaureate programs in geology, physical geography, and environmental science, and master’s programs in geospatial analysis and environmental geosystems. Geosciences is a dynamic, growing department that resides within the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, and is physically located within a newly renovated facility with state-of-the-art equipment. Responsibilities of the chair will include providing strong academic leadership for the Department, budgetary coordination, faculty/staff hiring and evaluations, facilitating planning and assessment, fostering community advancement programs, fundraising, facilitating the acquisition and implementation of external grants, teaching and mentoring students, and providing leadership in the development and oversight of instructional programs, research, and service commitments.

The successful candidate must have a distinguished record of teaching, research, and service in the environmental sciences, geosciences, or closely related area. The candidate will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated vision, leadership, administrative experience and an ability to work productively with faculty and students from diverse backgrounds. As Environmental Science is a relatively new degree offering within the department, applicants with backgrounds in this area are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must be eligible to meet the criteria for the rank of associate professor or professor. Expedited tenure upon appointment is possible. Start date for the position is August 1, 2020.

In order to successfully apply, applicants are required to include a Cover Letter, their Curriculum Vitae, a statement of Teaching Philosophy, and their Research Statement at the time of online application submittal. Additionally, applicants are required to include their Administrative Philosophy as “Other Document.” Names and contact information for recommendation letters and official university transcripts (not issued to applicant) of all degrees received will be required of all approved candidates selected for an interview.
