The School of Environment and Sustainability (SENS) at the University of Saskatchewan invites applications from outstanding scholars for a full-time, tenure track faculty position as the Centennial Chair in Economic Valuation in Energy Security for Northern, Rural, Remote and Indigenous Communities. The appointment is anticipated to begin on July 1, 2020, or earlier if possible. The successful candidate will have established themselves as an upcoming leader in problem-oriented interdisciplinary research that focuses on sustainability of energy systems and economic valuation relevant to energy security and renewable resource sectors.

We are looking for a dynamic candidate who has an externally-funded, innovative and successful research program and who will engage in creative teaching at the graduate level related to renewable energy and resource economics, particularly as it relates to energy security for northern, rural, remote and Indigenous communities. Specifically, we seek a candidate who will contribute to our new graduate professional program in energy security and also contribute to our other professional programs. Preference will be given to candidates with research interests and experience in the valuation of market and non-market benefits and costs associated with energy systems as it relates northern, rural, remote and Indigenous communities. The Centennial Chair will join a highly-engaged interdisciplinary faculty and student body working across social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering.

The preferred candidate will address economic valuation questions through the design and delivery of valuation instruments, including techniques to collect and analyze non-market and market valuation data – revealed and stated preferences – to inform discussion of trade-offs in energy system choices as it relates to the economic and social development of northern, rural and remote regions and Indigenous communities. The candidate must also demonstrate capacity to develop appropriate economic models to enable estimates of the economic implications of renewable energy and other energy options that takes into account sustainability of socio-ecological-economic systems, including human health and well-being. We would also value a scholar who can employ and can teach valuation methods that help frame policy and social preferences with respect to energy systems using information across varying spatial and temporal scales and expose social and ecological tradeoffs that complement economic assessments of energy systems.  An ability to conduct impactful community-engaged research is highly desirable.

The following attributes reflect the ideal candidate; other candidates will be considered but should possess as many of these attributes as possible:

  • A PhD in a relevant area of economics or cognate discipline, with an emphasis on energy policy, project economics and community planning;
  • Ability to lead and to contribute directly to research programs addressing renewable energy at the community level and to other resource sectors related to food, water, biocultural conservation, and/or environmental management;
  • Demonstrated record of implementing quantitative and qualitative valuation methods in their research program;
  • Demonstrated ability to impact change through research;
  • Proven record of innovative graduate and/or undergraduate teaching;
  • Experience with graduate supervision and teaching is desirable;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as demonstrated through collaborative interdisciplinary interactions, community engagement, and faculty collegiality;
  • Experience working with community partners – in government, industry or public;
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams;
  • Experience working with Indigenous, northern, or rural communities;
  • Excellent communications skills to both academic and public audiences; and
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining competitively awarded funding from the Canadian Tri-Agencies (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR) or similarly competitive national or international granting agencies.
