Assistant Professor position in Tectonics

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (http://scripps.ucsd.edu) (SIO) at the University of California San Diego invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a target start date of summer 2020.

We seek an outstanding individual who will establish an innovative, world-class, externally funded research program in the field of tectonics. The candidate would employ observational, laboratory, experimental and/or numerical techniques to investigate tectonic processes related to the generation, evolution, and deformation of Earth’s crust and lithosphere, in the oceans or continents. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research programs include sea-going components.

SIO is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and we are interested in applicants who will expand our current research programs and have the potential to build new connections between areas of current research expertise in the department and across the UCSD campus. The department’s current research programs and experimental, analytical and computational facilities are described at https://scripps.ucsd.edu/.

Candidates must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent in geoscience or a relevant field by the time of appointment.

The appointee is expected to develop and maintain a vigorous externally funded research program and to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the UCSD Earth Science program. Supervision of graduate students and service to the department, university, and broader disciplines are expected. Evidence of service and broader contributions to diversity, leadership activities, and other items that will contribute positively to departmental welfare are preferred. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.

Candidates are required to submit a 1) cover letter, 2) CV, 3) statements of research plans, teaching interests, and contributions to diversity, and 4) contact information for three references.

For full consideration, please apply by December 20, 2019 at:
