The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for multiple, full-time, open-rank teaching faculty positions. Salary and rank for specialized faculty appointments will be commensurate with qualifications. These positions are 9-month appointments paid over 12 months with additional opportunities for funding for other department activities through the summer. The Department seeks to reconfigure its undergraduate curriculum so that CEE graduates are even better prepared to lead efforts to solve global challenges. The Department seeks persons with a passion for undergraduate engineering education and student development.

A Ph.D. in engineering or engineering education is required, with CEE experience and training in education preferred. Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work as a team member, excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to utilize technology in instruction are also desired. It is expected that the strongest applicants will have engineering field experience and potential for professional licensure.

The department has identified the following specific curricular needs that represent the scope of work for these positions:

• Coordinate and manage the community of practice - which comprises key faculty, to ensure coordination of learning across classes and along the longitudinal structure of the curriculum.
• Support design and design thinking - through encouragement of innovation, interdisciplinary design, project-based learning, and industry interaction;
• Strengthen computational and data science skills - through direction and coordination of learning expectations, skills, and teaching material throughout the curriculum;
• Develop experiential learning - through development of hands-on activities, teaching technology, laboratory sessions, and service learning;
• Refine professional and business skills - through improved written and oral communication, entrepreneurial thinking, and team building and leadership skills; and
• Teach or co-teach CEE gateway courses - that provide the foundation for the longitudinal "flow of learning" along the curriculum.

The following tasks are also expected for these positions:

• Help with pedagogy and evidence-based reform in specific CEE classes as needed;
• Design and deliver assessments of the outcomes of longitudinal learning efforts;
• Produce scholarly work, particularly related to the scholarship of teaching and learning;
• Liaise with faculty, external advisory teams and industry professionals concerning the curriculum; and
• Provide service to the profession, the Department, and the University.

Opportunities exist to participate in related college and campus-wide communities, such as the Academy of Excellence in Engineering Education (AE3), the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) and the College of Education.
