Assistant Professor of Spatial and Environmental Data Science

Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources, University of California, Davis

 

Title: Assistant Professor of Spatial and Environmental Data Science. The Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Spatial and Environmental Data Science with a preferred emphasis in the intersections of big data and environmental science. This is an academic year (9-month), Assistant Professor tenure-track position with teaching, research, outreach/engagement and service responsibilities and includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach/engagement of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (https://caes.ucdavis.edu/research/aes).

 

Responsibilities:

The Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources is seeking applicants that focus on environmental research emphasizing environmental informatics using big data and geospatial approaches and analysis, with a goal to advance our understanding of spatial and temporal environmental patterns and processes, addressing natural and managed conditions.

 

The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program to address critical or emerging issues in global environmental change. The candidate is expected to show a record of achievement in data science/geospatial approaches at the intersection of environmental science/management. The successful candidate should demonstrate experience with various big data and geospatial technologies, and have an interest in and ability to work with emerging “big data” sources and data mining methods, including new data sources and types, high resolution temporal and spatial data, developing and using machine learning and other quantitative methods to integrate, visualize and discover information from sensor networks, environmental databases, and disparate sources and types of geospatial and temporal data. The position will complement existing LAWR strengths in regional climatology, hydrology, and biogeochemical processes and campus-wide excellence in ecology and environmental sciences. The candidate is expected to collaborate with environmentally relevant programs on campus and demonstrate experience and interest in working with interdisciplinary groups.

 

We seek a commitment to excellence in teaching. The applicant is expected to teach an undergraduate upper-level core GIS course, an additional upper-level undergraduate environmental data science course, and a graduate level course in her/his area of expertise (average of 2.5 courses per year). Supervision of graduate students, student advising, curricular development is expected.

 

Participation in and development of outreach/engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. This position is expected to collaborate with extension educators and partners in allied industries.

 

Qualifications:

 

Ph.D. or equivalent degree in environmental science, informatics, data science, soil science, hydrology, ecology, atmospheric science, geography, applied statistics, computer science or a closely related field. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in geospatial and environmental data science. The candidate must demonstrate interest, understanding, and commitment to contributing to diversity.

 

Salary:

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
