Assistant Professor Geosciences

The Department of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Dallas is seeking to fill a tenure­ system faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor in the broad field of quantitative basin analysis / stratigraphy/ sedimentology / paleoclimatology. The position is to be filled by August, 2020 to start in the Fall 2020 semester. Candidates for this position should have completed all requirements for a PhD by January 1, 2020, and are expected to have clearly demonstrated research interests and expertise in this general field. Principal teaching requirements will range from undergraduate level classes (e.g., sedimentology/stratigraphy) to graduate level classes (e.g., basin analysis, 3D seismic stratigraphy, earth systems). A demonstrated ability to integrate a range of research methods and data types is required, potentially including field­based observations, surface and subsurface investigations, incorporation of seismic and well data, and analytical or modeling approaches. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally recognized research program and excel in teaching, mentoring, and service roles within the department. We expect to hire a creative geoscientist with strong networking skills and an absolute commitment to applying for and securing external funding. Opportunities exist to build upon our collaborations with the energy, natural resources, and environmental sectors in areas that encompass exploration, characterization and monitoring, and also fundamental earth science research areas attractive for federal government grants (NSF, DOE, EPA, etc.)

Applicants with strengths in certain sedimentary processes may have opportunities to interact with other units on campus (e.g., wind energy initiatives in the UT Dallas Department of Mechanical Engineering). The Department of Geosciences is rebuilding and the successful applicant will play a big role in this effort.
