Job Details
The Department of Geography at Durham University seeks to appoint an exceptional scholar as an Assistant Professor with research and teaching interests in the broad field of Physical Geography, including a specialism in sea level. We are particularly keen to hear from those whose work addresses one or more of: quantifying and/or modelling sea level, proxy or direct measurements of sea level change over various timescales, and sea level impacts and coastal change. The successful applicant will develop world class scholarship in their field and we encourage work that develops a range of theoretical, conceptual and/or methodological approaches. Successful candidates will be close to completion of, or been awarded, a PhD in a relevant field, and demonstrate the potential for agenda-setting publications. They will show a commitment to delivering excellent teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, high-quality supervision to research postgraduates, and will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and masters-level teaching. In addition to their research, the successful candidates will perform departmental administrative tasks commensurate with their grade and contribute to our wider physical geography teaching programme.
This post offers an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the development of internationally excellent research and teaching while allowing you unrivalled opportunities to progress and embed your career in an exciting and progressive institution. Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by 1 Sep 2021. Please direct informal enquiries to Prof Mike Bentley (Head of Department) m.j.bentley@durham.ac.uk. The closing date for applications is 13 January 2020.

As an Assistant Professor we will look to you to develop research that complements and extends the work in one or more of our core research clusters: Ice Sheets and Sea level, Catchments and Rivers, Hazards and Surface Change. You will also contribute to our high-quality teaching programme and to departmental citizenship. You will benefit from our commitment to ensure that your teaching load is sustainable. This will give you time to carry out internationally excellent research, informing your teaching and supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
