The Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) of Columbia University is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to work on social and environmental factors that drive migration within and from West Africa. The work will be in collaboration with Columbia partners at Center for Integrated Earth System Information Network, School of International and Public Affairs, the Center for Climate Systems Research, and also partners at New York University and funded by the National Science Foundation’s Growing Convergence Research program.
The successful candidate should have a recent PhD in social or political science, economics, or environmental sciences or related fields and have research experience in some, or all of, the following: migration decision-making, migration-relevant economics, social and cultural influences on migration, climate impacts on subsistence and commodity agriculture and households, all preferably with a focus on Africa. The successful candidate will work with a diverse research team of climate scientists, economists, geographers, agronomists and hydrologists. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to work across the research program developing a transdisciplinary, convergence-based, research approach to migration. He or she must have strong quantitative, modeling and programming skills and be adept at working with disparate data sets of varying quality. The position will be located at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, NY but the Postdoctoral Researcher will be expected to also meet with and work with team members on the Columbia campus in Manhattan and at New York University.

Company
Our center has a unique standing at Columbia University. We are one of only a few centers in the United States actively developing a global climate model to understand past and future climates both on Earth and on other planets. To do so, we have a special relationship with NASA. We are co-located with the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in Columbia’s Armstrong Hall. Here, Columbia and NASA scientists work closely together to advance climate science and improve societal resilience to climate-related challenges both in the United States and around the world. CCSR scientists and staff also work with many other partners – private sector, governmental, and non-governmental organizations – to answer these challenging scientific, social, and economic questions.
