The Department of Earth Sciences in the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa seeks to fill three faculty positions at the level of Assistant Professor in the broad area of geologic hazards with focus on coastal environments, structural geology and tectonics, and geodesy and marine geophysics. We seek a group of talented scientists eager to leverage our unique location in the Pacific region on an ocean island chain, as well as contribute to studies of global Earth problems, while broadening our expertise in active processes that influence natural hazards.  It is also desired that these scientists contribute to, or use, modern geoinformatics infrastructure and data analysis methods. The successful applicants are expected to establish externally funded and nationally recognized research programs, enthusiastically contribute to graduate and undergraduate advising and teaching, and carry out professional service activities. Willingness to engage with faculty, staff, and students in a collaborative fashion that supports diversity and inclusivity is essential. Coastal Processes and/or Geologic Framework Studies We are interested in an individual who will use a combination of field observations and modeling to improve understanding of dynamic coastal processes, coastal geomorphology and the geologic framework of coastal systems including paleo archives of various types, impacts of sea level rise, coastal hazards, and/or nearshore hydrodynamics. Desirable expertise in modeling include processes such as sediment transport, beach morphodynamics, marine flooding, wave processes and past/present/future climate change-related coastal zone dynamics. Ability to design and maintain observation systems to underpin empirical decision-making, track coastal environmental changes, and/or to support data-assimilating model development are desirable. Structural Geology and Tectonics We seek applicants that will use modern geologic techniques to understand structure, rheological behavior, and/or mechanical processes at active tectonic settings using field observations in combination with modeling and/or laboratory experimentation. Our location offers an opportunity to focus on both onshore or offshore structural geologic mapping using cutting-edge techniques (e.g., Terrestrial Laser Scanning, LiDAR, Structure from Motion, acoustic imaging, sonar mapping). Of equal interest is research on naturally or experimentally deformed rocks and minerals to quantify deformation mechanisms and conditions (i.e., rock physics).  Example applications include magmatic intrusions, fracturing/faulting, landslides, aseismic slip and slow and fast earthquakes. Geodesy and Marine Geophysics We seek applicants that will use geophysical and/or geodetic techniques (e.g., high-resolution repeat topographic/bathymetric mapping, active or passive seismology, electro-magnetic methods, satellite-based observations, interferometric synthetic aperture radar, acoustic ranging, underwater strain-, tilt-, and gravimeters) to study active or recent deformation associated with volcanic and/or tectonic processes. This individual may also contribute to assessing risk for hazards such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides (terrestrial and/or submarine), and tsunamis. The Department of Earth Sciences (http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/) is one of thirteen research units and four academic departments within the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) (https://www.soest.hawaii.edu/soestwp/), a world-class research and academic institution focused on informing solutions to some of the world’s most vexing problems.
