POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Postdoctoral Research Scholar in Remote Sensing

Overview:
The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) at Arizona State University (ASU) seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar with an anticipated start date of March 1, 2020 and preferably should be filled by June 1, 2020. The full-time, non-tenure-track, benefits-eligible, fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) position is for one year with renewal anticipated based on funding and performance.

The postdoctoral scholar will conduct research with Professor Amy Frazier on an NSF-sponsored award involving Near Term Forecasts of Global Plant Distribution, Community Structure, and Ecosystem Function.

The position will be housed at ASU’s Tempe campus. The Tempe campus has approximately 60,000 students and is located in the rapidly growing metropolitan Phoenix area, which provides a wide variety of recreational and cultural opportunities and is especially desirable for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy biking, hiking, skiing, and other activities in the exquisite Arizona canyon lands and rugged terrain.

Job Description:
SGSUP is seeking to fill one Postdoctoral Research Scholar appointment that will contribute to research to improve predictions of how plant species respond to global change. The scholar will work with a team of researchers – the Institute for Biodiversity Forecasting - focused on addressing changes in species’ abundance and geographic distribution, community structure, and ecosystem function and assessing how differing conservation decisions can minimize the impacts of global change responses.

The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will help design and execute research using a combination of novel environmental information and high spatial and temporal remote sensing. The Scholar should therefore have expertise in gathering, managing, and analyzing remotely sensed data as well as a good understanding of the application of these data to ecology and ecosystem function.

Essential Duties:
●    Contribute to near-term biodiversity forecasting efforts through remote sensing analyses and data integration
●    Help conduct laboratory research on the species’ geographic distributions, community structure, and ecosystem function
●    Disseminate research outcomes in peer-reviewed publications and professional conferences
●    Provide guest lectures as appropriate and consistent with expertise for graduate/undergraduate courses
●    Participate in all group meetings and workshops

Minimum Qualifications:
●    A Ph.D. in geography, environmental science, plant science, ecological remote sensing, spatial ecology, or a related field by the time of appointment.
●    Demonstrated record of scientific publication in the fields of remote sensing, ecology, or geography
●    Strong data processing and analysis skills with Python and/or R
●    Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills (in English)

Desired Qualifications:
•    Programming skills (e.g., C, Python, scripting languages, etc.)
•    Modeling and visualization skills
•    Demonstrable expertise processing high spatial and temporal resolution remote sensing datasets
•    Familiarity with QGIS, ArcGIS, ENVI and/or Google Earth Engine

To Apply:
Initial deadline for accepting applications is January 2, 2020. If not filled, reviews will occur every week thereafter until the search is closed. To apply, candidates must submit the following materials online at http://apply.interfolio.com/72103

●    A Statement of Research Interests (not to exceed 2 pages)
●    A complete Curriculum Vitae including a list of publications
●    Up to 3 related publications
●    Contact information for three references (including name, phone number and email)

This is a paperless search, and only materials submitted electronically as outlined above will be considered. Questions related to the search may be addressed to Professor Amy Frazier (amy.frazier@asu.edu).
