The Dept. of Earth Sciences and the Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa invite applications for full-time M.S. and Ph.D. students. We seek motivated individuals with degrees in earth science, planetary science, astronomy, physics, math, chemistry, engineering, or computer science. The successful applicants—like all of our graduate students—will be mentored by internationally recognized researchers, and engage with faculty and students across the school.
Graduate assistantships with competitive stipends, tuition waivers, and benefits are awarded for research in a variety of fields in earth, environmental, and planetary sciences. Currently funded opportunities pertain to, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Mars surface studies relevant to the Mars 2020 Rover Mission
- Proto-planets, exoplanets, and their host stars
- Computational geodynamic studies of faulting and magmatism at midocean ridges
- Seismic imaging of crustal and magmatic structure beneath volcanoes
- Chronology & intensity of Earth's magnetic field variation recorded in Hawaiian lavas
- Tracking nutrient sources through the watershed of Hawai‘i Island
- Studying pollution pathways and impacts on health and sustainability of Hawaii's coastal waters
- Modeling impacts of sea level rise and geologic framework of coastal settings
- Geophysics, nuclear physics, and data science
