Posting Details

Within the School of Land Use and Environmental Change we commit to collaborative student-focused, community-based learning and innovation. We seek to answer questions, study processes and work with communities in a productive and reciprocal way to identify and shape resilient natural and human environments in a time of dynamic systemic change.

The School of Land Use and Environmental Change invites applications for a tenure track (Assistant Professor) position in Physical Geography with expertise in biogeography, especially within agricultural regions. We seek applicants who will work to help us fully realize our vision statement. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in introductory level physical geography, environmental studies, and GIS as well as advanced courses in biogeography and field methods.  Involvement in the delivery of program requirements such as capstone courses, practicums and internships is required. We seek applicants who share our passion for, and commitment to, innovative and inspirational teaching in a student-centered environment.

The successful candidate will be a collegial, energetic and innovative individual who has experience and interest in developing experiential learning opportunities including field trips, community-based engagement and local or global practicum placements. An ability to teach across traditional disciplinary boundaries or deliver courses in community settings would be an asset. The successful applicant must be able to incorporate or reflect Indigenous perspectives or ways of teaching and learning into their curriculum.  Applicants must be committed to scholarship and research that addresses biodiversity concerns in the eastern Fraser Valley and supports applied and experiential learning at an undergraduate university.  Of special interest is applied scholarship around the identification, mapping, and conservation of biodiversity in land use planning.

We are seeking individuals who can actively contribute to department growth and program development. This will involve participation in departmental and institutional committees, academic leadership, supporting student events and promoting department and institutional initiatives.  An ongoing commitment to professional development of teaching and learning as well as disciplinary focus is expected.

We particularly encourage applications from Indigenous scholars or teachers and/or researchers with experience in traditional ecological knowledge. Qualifications The successful candidate will have a PhD in Physical Geography or the equivalent by the position start date. Applicants should have a record of outstanding student-centered teaching, and demonstrate an ability to establish a successful research program which incorporates their research into applied learning opportunities for students.

How to Apply

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter that addresses the posting details and qualifications, a CV, a teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy statement, sample course plans for courses identified in the posting as well as specialized courses, syllabi from existing courses taught, and evidence of innovative and inspirational teaching.  A summary of relevant research and how you would involve student researchers should be included.  The names of three referees should be provided.  Please provide all relevant documents in a single PDF file.
