The position as a PhD (licentiate) student is announced as part of a research project entitled “Urban agriculture as blue-green infrastructure: Can it feed bodies and minds while protecting waterways?” Urban agriculture is increasing in popularity but is an understudied green infrastructure type in terms of nutrients. This project will fill part of this knowledge gap by looking at urban agriculture and nutrient cycling in Linköping Sweden and Minneapolis USA. This includes working with spatial data as well as setting up and running monitoring programs to assess nutrient flows in urban and periurban cultivation systems. Data collection will be informed by stakeholder workshops and interviews to identify further benefits of such systems and how to adapt them to multiple goals. Hence, the PhD (licentiate) student will work in a multidisciplinary environment with close connections to the society and in communication with relevant stakeholders.

The holder of the advertised position is expected to conduct field and laboratory work to quantify the flows of nitrogen and phosphorus through urban agriculture, with a focus on water quality. The objective is to better understand if urban farming could act as a source of pollution.
