Postdoctoral Associate/Senior Postdoctoral Associate

The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for the Postdoctoral Associate/Senior Postdoctoral position. The title/rank will be contingent upon the selected candidate's skills and experience in their area of expertise.

A Postdoctoral Associate / Senior Postdoctoral Associate is needed to conduct basic research on the chemistry of the atmosphere, to include aircraft-based measurements of halogenated gases, ozone and particulate matter. The selected candidate will perform data analysis, write proposals for external support, and prepare manuscripts for publication in appropriate specialized journals.

Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in analytical or atmospheric chemistry, or closely related field in hand by April 15, 2020.

Senior Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand by April 15, 2020. Three (3) years of full-time directly related research experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in chemistry, atmospheric science or related field. Three (3) or more years experience with atmospheric data analysis. Experience with trace level atmospheric measurements, especially those relying on optical absorption techniques. Experience with error analysis for data involving trace level atmospheric measurements. Experience in the study of the photochemical production of atmospheric aerosols and ozone, and with atmospheric halogen chemistry. Experience with aircraft-based field measurement logistics. Experience with atmospheric photochemical models.

Experience with atmospheric transport modeling and field measurement logistics.

Brief Description of Duties (Postdoctoral Associate):

Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, the Postdoctoral Associate will assist the PI in conducting basic research on the chemistry of the atmosphere, to include aircraft-based measurements of halogenated gases, ozone and particulate matter, ensuring that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. Aircraft campaigns will be conducted in the Alaska North Slope region. The selected candidate will design flight plans, conduct field campaign logistics, conduct data analysis, and provide data archiving and management, write proposals for external support, and prepare manuscripts for publication in appropriate specialized journals.

Postdoctoral Essential Duties

• Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, prepare for and conduct atmospheric measurements in the field, which includes calibrating and assessing performance of analytical instrumentation aboard the research group's aircraft.

• Conduct data analysis by converting raw data into final concentration v. time data, conducting simple matrix algebra operations on the data (usually using MATLAB), and conducting Quality Control of the data. Conduct photochemical modeling analysis of the photochemical processes occurring in the Arctic Ocean region.

• Participate/assist in manuscript writing and proposals.

• Manage data archives.

• Other duties as assigned.

Brief Description of Duties (Senior Postdoctoral Associate):

Independently and/or with colleagues, the Senior Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research on the chemistry of the atmosphere, working on highly complex, and technically broad challenges and problems such as the design of aircraft-based experiments that enable study of multi-phase halogen chemistry, ensuring that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. The selected candidate will construct flight plans (which requires the ability to read aviation sectional maps, and to understand the limitations of aircraft, e.g. with respect to icing hazards, and controlled airspace avoidance and communications), perform data analysis, write proposals for external support from federal agencies such as NSF, NOAA and/or NASA, and prepare manuscripts for publication in appropriate specialized journals.

Senior Postdoctoral Essential Duties

• Prepare for and conduct atmospheric measurements in the field, which includes calibrating and assessing performance of analytical instrumentation aboard the research group's aircraft.

• Write manuscripts for publication and proposals for external support.

• Manage data archives.

• Other duties as assigned.
