EFFECTS OF DIKE/FISSURE-WALL PROPERTIES ON NEAR-SURFACE MAGMA TRANSPORT AND ERUPTION: AN EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH USING MOLTEN WAX

A fully funded PhD position is available at University of Otago, New Zealand, to carry out an experimental programme examining the thermal feedback that takes place in magma moving through a crack/fissure to the surface during dike-fed volcanic eruptions. The study will employ a unique experimental apparatus, being designed and constructed this year, which will allow manipulation of the temperature and geometry of fissure/dike walls through which PEG wax will be erupted. The student will work initially with a postdoc to tune the apparatus and establish experimental procedures, and will then take the lead in operating a series of experiments for ~ 2 years. There will be a fieldwork component as well, in which model results will be tested against features of fossilized dike and fissure systems.

The funding matches that provided by Otago PhD scholarships, which offer a stipend of $NZ 27,000/yr and payment of university fees for the expected duration of the degree, which is 36 months.

Applications for Otago PhD admission and scholarships can be made at any time after completion of the preceding degree, with a typical time to decision of about 2 months. Study can begin at any time of the year.
