The Earth Science Branch at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, is seeking data scientists for multiple positions to design and develop cutting-edge techniques to improve discovery, access, visualization and use of Earth science remote sensing data by other agencies, academia and industry and to conduct research and applications addressing challenging Earth science problems.  Successful candidates will join more than 100 other federal employees, academic staff, and contractors supporting Earth and atmospheric science, applications, data analysis, and machine learning efforts within the Branch, which is a subset of the Science Research and Projects Division, and the Science and Technology Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

As an Applications Data Management scientist, you will actively participate in scientific investigations with other scientists in the development and use of tools for the analysis of data from satellites, airborne, and ground-based observing platforms. You will conduct intensive research investigations and / or application studies directed towards discovering, disseminating, and applying new and expanded knowledge in data science and informatics that serve as ideas for new projects. You will serve as a subject matter expert relevant to the Earth science mission, research and data analysis, archive, and management responsibilities of the Earth Science Branch, working effectively as a member of a diverse research team. You will formulate and lead the development of proposals for new research activities, help execute funded projects, and document accomplishments in the peer-reviewed literature.  You will communicate scientific results through presentations and the scientific peer review and publication process to document, validate the quality of scientific research, and obtain recognition as a technical expert by the scientific community.

Your technical work involves setting research goals, the design and implementation of technical approaches and tool development, budgeting, project scheduling, synthesis of results, and documentation of processes and outcomes.  You will manage individual and/or group projects as task, team, or activity lead from project initiation, concept development, and development, test, and implementation phases. You will work autonomously or in collaboration with other teams from across NASA, academia, or industry. You will direct intensive research towards discovering, disseminating, and applying new and expanded knowledge in data science and informatics that serve as ideas for new projects in accordance with Agency guidance and direction.

Selected candidates will be responsible for supporting and conducting independent and team-focused research investigations and / or application-focused studies directed towards new and expanded knowledge in Earth and atmospheric sciences for societal benefit.  Candidates will have an opportunity to lead the development of research proposals for new activities, execute funded projects, and share their accomplishments through conference participation and appropriate peer-reviewed literature.

Positions are expected to be announced very soon under the category of Research Physical Scientist, Applications Data Management title at the GS-13 grade level.  Successful candidates will have had recent experience with scientific data stewardship practices and policies, use of metadata and data standards for Earth Science, in processing large volumes of Earth Science data to extract new insights, and in developing scientific software for geospatial data processing and analysis. Candidates should have made regular contributions to a research team with some guidance and direction, developed new analysis techniques to solve challenging problems, made contributions to peer-reviewed proposals in response to technical solicitations, and have contributed to peer-reviewed publications as part of a demonstrated publication record.
