Job Details
Three PhD projects on varved (annually laminated) sediments used to study past hydroclimatic conditions are available through the INRS Canada Research Chair in Environmental Sedimentology.
The objective of the first project is to understand how dewatering and compaction affect the internal structure of clastic sediments through observation of potential changes in grain orientation and arrangement, and porosity within the facies. It also aims at evaluating what disturbances affect these unconsolidated sediments during coring in the field or sampling in the laboratory. The project will combine classic analyses of thin sections with CT scanning and micro-CT.
The objective of the second project is to develop a new micro-CT image analysis protocol to obtain data sets similar to those obtained using thin sections. The project will test the reliability, reproducibility and robustness of the new method with existing series.
The third project has a double objective: (1) extending the existing hydroclimatic reconstructions of the last millennium produced using varve physical properties, and (2) studying the sediment biogeochemical properties to reconstruct lake limnological conditions since the last glaciation.
REQUIREMENTS: Master’s degree in Earth science, oceanography, physics, or physical or geological engineering. Excellent computer proficiency. Experience in image analysis and an interest in environmental issues are assets. Willingness to learn French.
HOW TO APPLY: Send by email the following documents in one PDF file: 1) cover letter; 2) CV; 3) all university transcripts; 4) list of practical and technical skills; 5) names and contact information for two referees.
Company
Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) is dedicated to university graduate level research and training. It is the highest-ranked academic research institute in Canada in terms of research intensity (funding per faculty member). One hundred and fifty professors and more than 800 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows work at its four research centres in Quebec. INRS research teams are active in both fundamental and applied research and play a key role in developing practical solutions to problems confronting society. Centre Eau Terre Environnement (Water Earth Environment Research Centre) focuses its activities on the sustainable management of water and earth resources and on finding solutions to environmental problems.
