Graduate research assistantship is available to support students pursuing M.S. or Ph. D. degrees with the Division of Marine Science (DMS) in the School of Ocean Science and Engineering at the University of Southern Mississippi. Candidates should have a B.S. or M.S. degree, preferably in a physical science discipline with selected courses in physics and mathematics. While not required, prior knowledge in remote sensing and skills in programming are a plus.

Tuition waiver and monthly stipend with benefit will be provided for admitted applicants, who are expected to conduct researches and report the results in scientific conferences and peer-reviewed journals, leading towards a successful completion of graduate degrees. The exact research topic for a particular student, which will be decided in the first year to fit the overall interests and the skill set of the student, will be in these general areas: theoretical and computational investigation on the interaction of light with the ocean and the constituents contained within; observational study in the lab and/or field of the optical properties of particles (living or nonliving); application of optical observation, including satellite data, to study the oceanic and coastal environments.
