Job Details

The Nelson Research Group is searching for a highly motivated student with interests in agricultural sustainability to contribute to a multi-institutional, interdisciplinary project studying how landscape simplification affects ecosystem health and agricultural productivity. The successful applicant will be admitted to the Department of Geography and Geospatial Sciences graduate program in geography at Kansas State University.

This project will examine agricultural systems across the United States to identify potential benefits of, and barriers to, landscape diversification.  Candidates should have a background in geography, engineering, environmental science, agricultural science, or a related field. Strong candidates will have experience with statistics, GIS, or programming (eg. Python or R). The successful applicant will be expected to collaborate with the project team to conduct statistical modeling, conduct field interviews, and present and publish research results.

A competitive graduate research assistantship, including annual stipend, tuition, and benefits will be provided. To apply, please email a cover letter describing your experience, qualification, and interest in the position and a CV to Katherine Nelson (ksnelson@ksu.edu).  Additional inquiries via email are welcome.

Company

Discovery and dissemination of new knowledge are the cornerstones of the Department of Geography missions. Drawing upon the research interests and experience of the faculty, the department's core areas of geographic inquiry are in the broad areas of nature and society interactions, population and health geographies, cultural geography and landscape, rural landscapes and sustainability, earth systems geography, and geographic information science. K-State geographers enjoy a strong research and teaching reputation and the department ranks highly among the social, physical, and biological sciences sciences at Kansas State University. Our department has also been recognized as a top-ranked geography doctoral program for small, less expensive universities. Our faculty actively publish their scholarship and are successful at securing extramural funding to support their research programs. Collaborative, and multidisciplinary, research involving teams of students and faculty is common. The benefits of the geography undergraduate and graduate programs at K-State include a balanced curriculum, a broad-based approach to research and other forms of scholarship, and a commitment to fieldwork as a component of geographic inquiry. We strive to maintain an informal, friendly atmosphere and offers students the opportunity to work closely with faculty members, research staff, and visiting scientists.
