With support from the US National Science Foundation, we are seeking two PhD students to participate in a project focused on doliolids in the South Atlantic Bight continental shelf ecosystem. The doctoral research will focus on central themes in Biological Oceanography and involve participation in oceanographic research expeditions. The research will involve learning a range of modern laboratory and shipboard techniques including, for example, molecular biology omics, stable isotope analysis, in situ imaging and machine learning, and culturing of doliolids for more detailed studies in the laboratory. In addition to field and laboratory opportunities, you will have opportunities to professionally network by presenting the results of your research at national and international meetings.

Your academic home and laboratory work will take place at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, Savannah, GA (www.skio.uga.edu), where you will join a growing population of graduate students in the University of Georgia’s Marine Science program (www.marsci.uga.edu/students/graduates). The lead investigators of this project are Drs. Marc Frischer (https://www.skio.uga.edu/people/faculty/marc-frischer/), Jay Brandes (www.skio.uga.edu/people/brandes/) and Adam Greer (https://www.skio.uga.edu/people/faculty/adam-greer/). Your primary supervisor will be determined by your interests and specific research project. Interested students should contact Dr. Marc Frischer (frischer@uga.edu) and apply to the UGA Marine Sciences program at http://www.marsci.uga.edu/prospective-graduate-students. For full consideration, applications should be complete by January 1, 2021.

The University of Georgia, with over 35,000 students and 2,900 faculty members, is one of the four major educational institutions of the University System of Georgia and offers doctoral degrees in most fields. Georgia is well known for its quality of life in regard to both outdoor and urban activities (www.exploregeorgia.org).
