Earth System Modeler and/or Data Scientist

The Center for Earth System Modeling, Analysis, and Data (ESMAD) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for two fixed-term research faculty positions focusing on all aspects of Earth System modeling and data analysis. The successful candidate will join a new research center dedicated to developing a stronger Earth and climate system modeling community at the university and will work on a wide range of topics, which range from basic climate and Earth system science to transdisciplinary projects requiring strong interdisciplinary engagement. The successful candidate will have a strong background in both Earth system science and data science with possible connections to one of the following domains: meteorology/atmospheric science, geosciences, oceanography, civil and environmental engineering, statistics, or applied mathematics. A key goal of the center is to provide scientific support to interdisciplinary projects across the university and so the candidate should have demonstrated experience working in a collaborative environment across multiple disciplines. Within the new center, the selected candidate will have considerable freedom to build and join research projects to develop a collaborative environment for engaging on basic and applied projects that require expertise in climate system science across the university. We expect the new hires should be able to work on all aspects of center activities, including the core elements required for interdisciplinary projects: setting up and running Earth system Models, analyzing data sets to provide scientific support, and managing climate/weather/geoscience data archives. This position provides unique opportunities for research, education, outreach, decision support, and professional development, as well as mentoring by a team of experts in relevant disciplines.

Evidence of completion of a Ph.D. in a relevant field by date of hire is required. To be considered for this position, applicants should upload a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, reprints of two manuscripts, and contact information for three professional references as a single PDF file. The cover letter should explain the applicant's interest in the position, highlight relevant qualifications and experience, and include links to examples of relevant prior work.

The Pennsylvania State University's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences takes an active role in building a talented, inclusive, and culturally competent workforce. We understand that our shared future is guided by basic principles of fairness, mutual respect, and commitment to each other. Applicants should provide evidence, either woven through their application materials or as a separate diversity statement, of a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusive excellence, and belonging and of engagement which creates an inclusive environment in their department/workplace.

Review of applications will begin immediately, and the position will remain open until filled. This is a fixed term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding. Questions regarding the position should be directed to Prof. Chris E. Forest mailto:(
