Develop science strategy at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) as Division Director of the Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change (Job ID: 311049) within the Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD). Supervising multiple research groups and their associated research areas, the Division Director focuses on developing deeper knowledge and predictive understanding of integrated Earth and Human Systems, enabling us to better prepare for, and adapt to, the rapid changes those systems are undergoing.

We are seeking an experienced leader with expertise in executing business plans and contributing to the development of a strategy, including developing internal partnerships and external collaborations with the broader scientific community. The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division Director oversees 190 staff with a range of disciplinary backgrounds across three research groups – Earth System Measurements and Data, Earth System Modeling, and the Joint Global Change Research Institute at the University of Maryland. This position offers the rare opportunity to guide the strategic science direction of the largest atmospheric and climate science enterprise within the U.S. Department of Energy. Supporting PNNL’s mission and business strategies, the Division Director also supervises key operations, including PNNL’s Atmospheric Measurement Laboratory and atmospheric laboratory aircraft (manned and unmanned) operated by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program.

As a scientific leader and collaborator, you’ll develop, steward, and manage project investments related to fundamental science mission objectives. Further, you’ll have the opportunity to create a balanced portfolio that includes conducting science in the field, working with modelers, and leading high-impact research programs. Experience leading large and complex programs, in addition to evidence of moving science and technology pursuits into new areas is desired. You’ll collaborate with the EBSD Leadership Team to engage and empower staff in a highly creative, productive, and innovative environment that fully embraces the values of diversity and inclusion.

Minimum Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree with 12 plus years’ experience; or Advanced Degree plus 10 years of experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 15 years of experience; or Advanced Degree plus 13 years of experience.
  • Strong preference to PhD plus 10 years of experience working in atmospheric science, climate science, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated track record of increasing responsibility in line and capability management.
  • Familiarity with the Department of Energy’s environmental and earth systems science strategy and programs.
  • Skilled in articulating and communicating a strategic vision, motivating and empowering staff from a range of disciplines, and communicating capabilities and impact to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to create a safe, secure, and inclusive environment in which all staff can excel, and to promote high impact, team-oriented science.
  • Good listening skills, experience with promoting effective information flow across an organization, and the ability to build effective relationships vertically and horizontally.
  • Familiarity with ES&H safety criteria for safe operation of laboratories, in compliance with lab, state, and federal regulations is required.  Field deployments are a major activity in this division, and the successful candidate will be expected to have or gain experience in overseeing such activities, as they hold accountability for safe operations.  Experience in managing or overseeing field campaigns, complex projects, and/or major purchases would be a plus.
