We are seeking Ph.D. students to work on the following project to begin in the Fall of 2021 in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University. Please contact the faculty listed below for more information. Details on applying to Cornell are available here: https://gradschool.cornell.edu/admissions/
Cornell University intends to drill in 2021 an exploratory borehole to characterize the hydrological-mechanical-chemical system of the upper crust, where Appalachian Basin strata overlie Adirondack-like Grenville basement. These studies underpin refinement of plans to later develop a deep geothermal heat-extraction well field. Beyond providing data to 3 km depth, the borehole will become an observatory and long-lasting laboratory. A broad range of geosciences and geothermal engineering student opportunities exist, spanning hydrogeology, geomechanics, seismology, reactive transport chemistry, and heat-chemical-mechanical-fluid interactions. Contact Professors Patrick Fulton, Jefferson Tester, and Teresa Jordan for more information: pfulton@cornell.edu; jwt54@cornell.edu; or teresa.jordan@cornell.edu
