Research Associate (Biological Oceanography / Microbial Biogeochemistry) (m/f/d)

starting on April 1st 2021.

Job Description

The jobholder will examine biological carbon pump processes in the ocean. The focus will be on scientific studies e.g. on particle formation and export, as well as on the microbial degradation of organic substances in the deep ocean. The successful candidate will engage in the planning, application and execution of third-party projects and seagoing expeditions as well as on student training.

Qualification

Prerequisites for a successful application are a PhD in Biological Oceanography or a related subject, as well as a strong background in Planktology and Microbiology. Knowledge on the determination of the vertical export of particles in the ocean, e.g. with sediment traps, as well as on the measurement of metabolic rates, e.g. with radioisotopes, are desirable. Extensive experience in the planning and execution of seagoing expeditions are expected. Experience with responsible activities as chief scientist or as a team leader or similar on board are beneficial. Ability and readiness for seagoing research are required. The successful candidate can demonstrate an excellent publication record as well as successful third-party funding acquisition.

The position is available for a funding period of three years with the possibility of an extension (another 3 years). The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).

The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E14 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position cannot be split.
