The Center for Climate Systems Research (CCSR) in the Earth Institute, Columbia University in New York invites applicants for an Associate Research Scientist appointment to study geophysical sea ice dynamics and develop numerical modelling techniques to improve the representation of sea ice in global climate models.

The Associate Research Scientist will study the physical properties of geophysical sea ice, devise novel approaches to modelling geophysical sea ice, and develop the sea-ice dynamics component of the GISS climate model (modelE). In conjunction with available observational datasets, the Associate Research Scientist will use modelE to study the current Arctic sea-ice decline, potential future ice loss, and other relevant cryospheric research questions. The Associate Research Scientist will perform original research, present novel results at scientific meetings, publish first-author papers in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute to funding proposals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in ocean or cryospheric science or related field and at least two years post-PhD relevant experience is required.
  • Strong mathematics and programming skills.
  • Expertise in running global climate models and analyzing simulation results are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience studying sea-ice physics and processes.
  • Experience working with in situ and satellite datasets of observed sea-ice properties
