The Ecohydraulics Laboratory at the University of Central Florida is seeking PhD students to support NSF-funded research focused on feedbacks between hydrodynamic processes, biota (mangroves, seagrasses, marsh grasses, oyster reefs) and sediment transport. The project involves coupled lab-field experimentation and requires both field work in a US National Park and lab work in a sediment recirculating flume. The successful candidate will study towards a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in the Water Resources Engineering group at UCF’s Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering. The position is available for start in Spring 2021 or Summer/Fall 2021. It is preferable that students start their field work during the summer field season (May-August 2021).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • B.Sc. and/or M.Sc. degree in Water Resources, Civil, Environmental, Biological or Ecological Engineering, or in a related area (Hydrology, Geomorphology, Marine or other relevant Earth Sciences) from an accredited institution before August 2021.
  • Strong quantitative background (both coursework and professional or research experience) in hydrology/hydraulics. Experience with coding and analysis (preferably in MATLAB).
  • Interest or relevant experience in Ecohydrology or Ecohydraulics.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Prior record of published scholarly work, including Master’s thesis or journal publication, is a plus.
  • Field experience in aquatic environments (boating experience a plus).
  • Experience in experimental hydraulics and/or interest in acoustic velocimetry (ADCP, ADV), both in the lab and in the field.
  • Willingness to be a team player. Please see details here: http://ecohydraulics.weebly.com/join-us.html
  • The Kibler Ecohydraulics Lab fosters inclusion and diversity and particularly welcomes applications from students currently under-represented in the Engineering field.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Applicants must apply and be accepted to UCF’s Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering. Applicants interested in being considered for this assistantship should complete their application by the Fall priority deadline (January 15, 2021) and should contact Dr. Kibler ahead of time. If you plan to apply, please send a CV and writing sample (preferably work on which you are the first author) to Dr. Kelly Kibler at kelly.kibler@ucf.edu.
