Graduate Student

The Bergstrom Watershed Biogeochemistry Lab at Boise State University is seeking to hire 1-2 graduate students at the masters or PhD level to begin Fall or Spring of 2021-22. 

The lab focuses primarily on the hydrologic and biogeochemical impacts of rapidly changing systems. We seek to understand how shifting landscape structure and hydrologic fluxes influence biogeochemical cycling, water quality and quantity. Cold and glacierized systems are at the forefront of this change, and therefore are a focus of this lab, though we work across systems and scales.  Our lab is housed within the Geosciences department at Boise State, which has strengths in Hydrology, Geochemistry, and Cryospheric sciences. 

Students may have the opportunity to develop their research focus, and/or develop their own work within an ongoing project. If you have a specific topic or research question of particular interest, I’m happy to discuss. Potential areas include: 

• Weathering-derived solute fluxes from glacerized watersheds
• The role of ice and seasonal snow in mediating the downstream ecosystem (hydrology, water temperature, nutrient and solute supplies)
• The influence of dust on geochemistry and energy balance of ice 
• Watershed structural influences on sediment and solute loading to streams
• Surface water - groundwater exchange impacts on nutrient and solute transport

I am seeking students with a strong research background to participate in collaborative, interdisciplinary research while working toward a degree in Geoscience or Hydrology. Students will have the opportunity to conduct field- and/or lab-based research and will be encouraged to pursue professional development through teaching, presenting research findings, participating in outreach activities, and fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive research environment. 

Boise is the largest metropolitan area in Idaho and was listed as #1 in the top places to live in 2019. It has a vibrant downtown with great restaurants, cafes, and breweries. The Boise River flows through the center of the city lined by the greenbelt with bike paths and parks. Finally, access to Idaho’s amazing rivers and mountains is right out the back door.
