The Dept. of Earth Sciences and the Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa invite applications for full-time M.S. and Ph.D. students. We seek motivated individuals with degrees in earth science, planetary science, astronomy, physics, math, chemistry, engineering, or computer science. The successful applicants—like all of our graduate students—will be mentored by internationally recognized researchers, and engage with faculty and students across the school. We strongly encourage applications by individuals from underrepresented groups, including (but are not limited to) those representing the intersections of race, ethnicity, cultural background, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, and physical ability.
Graduate assistantships with competitive stipends, tuition waivers, and benefits are awarded for research in a variety of fields in earth, environmental, and planetary sciences. Currently funded opportunities pertain to, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Cosmochemistry, small Solar System bodies, and laboratory experiments
- Seismic imaging of crustal and magmatic structure beneath volcanoes
- Proto-planets, exoplanets, and their host stars
- Computational geodynamic studies lithosphere mechanics and mantle convection
- Geophysics, nuclear physics, and data science
