Seeking a PhD student to participate in an NSF-funded cruise to the central Arctic Ocean on board the RV Sikuliaq during the early Fall of 2021. During this cruise the student will assist in the acquisition of multi-channel seismic reflection and ocean bottom seismic refraction data to test hypotheses about the origin of the Canada Basin. These data will form the basis of the student’s PhD thesis. The student will undertake coursework at the University of Alaska and collaborate with colleagues in Denmark and Norway both during the cruise and after.

The student should have excellent quantitative skills, including knowledge of relevant scientific software (e.g. GMT, python) and the ability to undertake MCS data processing and interpretation with commercially available software packages.

The student will receive 12 months of RA support (stipend, tuition, fees and health insurance) during the term of the NSF grant. This will be supplemented with TA support from the University of Alaska.

Interested students should feel free to contact the PI, Professor Bernard Coakley, by e-mail; bjcoakley@alaska.edu with any questions they might have about the project.
