The USGS Earthquake Science Center is conducting an open search for up to two permanent Research Geophysicists in seismology/ground motion modeling in the Moffett Field (Mountain View), CA office. This permanent position is advertised at a GS13 or GS14 level. Duties include:

  • Conducting research in seismology, which may include: numerical modeling of earthquake rupture; simulations of wave propagation through complex crustal structure; and analysis of ground-motion observations from earthquakes.
  • Developing quantitative, physical models of the earthquake process and wave propagation using novel or complex modeling or computational methods, improving our ability to model or predict earthquake hazards;
  • Benchmarking these models using earthquake observations, to provide information on accuracy of earthquake source and crustal property models; and,
  • Developing approaches to incorporate new physical models or observations of earthquake source or crustal properties into key USGS products, such as ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning (EEW), ShakeMap or the National Seismic Hazard Maps.
