Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Geology and Geomaterials Research Team within the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division is seeking a dynamic postdoctoral researcher to join our multidisciplinary team working on projects related to the safe, long-term disposal of spent nuclear fuel and waste. In this position, you will have the opportunity to interact and learn from researchers with a wide range of expertise, produce innovative research and advance your professional career.

Your research will include:

  • Performing laboratory hydrothermal experiments to characterize the stability of engineered barrier materials at elevated temperatures and pressures
  • Modelling water-rock interactions and mineral stability in systems with variable bulk chemistry
  • Using experimental and modelling results to develop new concepts related to the design and function of geologic repositories for spent nuclear fuel and waste

You will integrate experimental and modelling results, work closely with a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional team, present work at national and international conferences and integrate with the broader Department of Energy (DOE) Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition program to advance the US repository science program.

We seek applications from candidates with expertise in any of the following research areas: high-temperature aqueous geochemistry, hydrothermal/geothermal systems, water-rock interaction and/or metamorphic petrology. The term of the appointment is two (2) years, with the option to extend to a third year depending on performance and funding availability.

Requirements:

  • PhD in earth science, chemistry, material science or closely related field
  • Strong background and publication record in geochemistry or a closely related field
  • Strong communication skills and experience presenting at national conferences
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment

Desired Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of aqueous geochemistry or water-rock interaction
  • Background in geochemical modeling using software such as EQ3/6, PHREEQC or Geochemist’s Workbench
  • Experience in laboratory experimental work and/or the workings of various hydrothermal experimental reactors
  • Familiarity with mineralogy and crystal chemistry of silicate, clay and oxide minerals
