ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY

Environmental Water Chemistry

The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) in Syracuse invites applications to join the Chemistry Department (http://www.esf.edu/chemistry) in an academic-year, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Environmental Chemistry with a concentration in Water Chemistry. 

 Responsibilities: Duties include developing an externally-funded, internationally-recognized graduate research program in environmental chemistry, and teaching undergraduate and graduate classes. The overall teaching load will be 3 courses per year, with at least one course in Water Chemistry.  Other teaching assignments will be determined by the candidate’s expertise and the needs of the Chemistry Department. This could include undergraduate courses usually found in a chemistry curriculum (general, organic, analytical, physical, bio- and inorganic chemistry) and/or graduate courses related to environmental chemistry or other chemistry areas.

All ESF faculty will provide service to the college and their home departments and programs by participating in governance as well as providing professional service to the community and their disciplines.

Required Qualifications: A PhD in Chemistry or related area with a strong background in water chemistry.

Preferred Qualifications: At least 12 months of relevant postdoctoral experience and research interests in basic or applied water chemistry, ability to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in chemistry, including water chemistry, evidence for the potential to develop an externally-supported graduate research program, and excellent oral and written communication skills.  Broad areas of interest include but are not limited to limnology, groundwater chemistry, oceanography, water treatment and environmental biochemistry.

About the Department: The Chemistry Department offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in biochemistry, natural products chemistry, environmental chemistry and polymer chemistry. The department currently has 13 faculty members distributed among these sub-areas and enrolls about 60 undergraduate students and 40 graduate students. The department occupies the 6700 m² Jahn Laboratory, built in 1997 specifically for chemistry research and laboratory instruction. Major chemical instrumentation is maintained and operated by Analytical and Technical Services (https://www.esf.edu/ats/).  In 2019, a suite of new Thermo Scientific instruments was acquired that includes Orbitrap and triple-quad mass spectrometers (MS) interfaced to gas chromatographs (GC) and high performance liquid chromatographs (HPLC).   Other major equipment includes MALDI-TOF-MS, GC-MS (single quad), LC-MS-MS, GC-EA-IRMS, LA-ICP-MS and ICP-OES, 600 and 800 MHz NMRs and scanning and transmission electron microscopes.

The ESF campus is contiguous with Syracuse University and is close to SUNY Upstate Medical University.  The three institutions have very close ties that allow students to cross-register for classes and foster research collaboration among them.  The Syracuse Veterans Administration Hospital, Upstate Medical University Hospital, Crouse Hospital and Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital are within walking distance from ESF, and also offer extensive research and collaborative opportunities. Our University Hill community provides students and faculty with the resources of large institutions of higher education, including a wide array of courses, computer and library facilities, and sports and health services.
