The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of landscapes and habitats, and a responsible approach to natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 500 people, of whom 140 work at SLF in Davos.

For the new research center “Climate Change, Extremes, and Natural Hazards in Alpine Regions – CERC”, which is established as part of the SLF in Davos, we are seeking as of 1 July 2021 a

Research Unit Leader (80-100%)

You will have the unique opportunity to establish and shape an interdisciplinary research unit at the SLF as part of the new research center. The research center is jointly funded by the Canton of Grisons and the WSL, with support by ETH Zurich (see https://cerc.slf.ch). As an internationally recognized researcher in at least one of the research areas of the new unit, you will lead the research unit with about 40 employees together with the group leaders. The coordination and promotion of research for your unit as well as the management of your own projects are part of your multifaceted and challenging responsibilities. You are committed to knowledge transfer and implementation of scientific results in practice. Furthermore, you will also be responsible for acquiring third-party funding for research projects and for liaising with authorities and organizations at national and international level. You will work closely with the head of the research center to jointly achieve the goals.

At the last years, you have pursued your scientific career with dedication, you have several years of experience in independent research, and you have an extensive track record in one or more of the following research areas: (1) permafrost; (2) alpine remote sensing, early detection and warning; (3) alpine mass movements; or (4) mountain ecosystems.

You are experienced in leading research groups and/or in managing interdisciplinary research projects. You are an integrative personality with good negotiation skills and are proficient in at least one of the national languages of Switzerland as well as in written and spoken English.
