PhD Position on
Stress profiling and stress heterogeneities for deep geothermal projects
he Centre for Hydrogeology and Geothermics (CHYN) at the University of Neuchâtel invites applications for a PhD position in the area of stress characterisation. The successful candidate must have an MSc in earth sciences or related field. A solid scientific background and knowledge in rock mechanics and geothermal reservoir characterisation are of prime importance. Experience in borehole logging data acquisition and interpretation and numerical modelling methods are an asset. Good communication and writing skills in English are required. Oral knowledge in French is advantageous.
Project description
The PhD candidate will work in the framework of the SPINE – Stress Profiling in EGS project. The objective of the project is to develop better stress characterisation methodologies for deep geothermal projects. The in-situ stress state is a key parameter for designing a deep geothermal reservoir, as it as a strong influence on borehole stability, reservoir permeability and reservoir response to hydraulic injections. The PhD candidate will be working within the international SPINE consortium in order to improve our understanding of stress variation within the earth crust with important implication for both fundamental and applied rock mechanics problems.
Duration
The position is approximately 3 years and can be filled by the successful candidate in Spring 2021.
