Postdoctoral Fellowship Opening: Marine Wave Boundary Layer Turbulence

School for Marine Science and Technology
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth

The School for Marine Science and Technology at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for a postdoctoral investigator to work on problems relating to the effects of turbulence, aerosols, and other atmospheric parameters on optical transmission in the marine atmospheric boundary layer.  Specific project areas include field observations from fixed, autonomous and shipboard platforms, and state-of-the-art numerical modeling of how fluctuating properties of the marine boundary layer affect optical transmission. Work will include collecting and interpreting field observations using theory and numerical results; analyzing and synthesizing data from such studies; working with researches from collaborating institutions; and disseminating results through workshops, conference presentations, and peer reviewed publications.

A Ph.D. in physical oceanography or meteorology, or closely related field is required.  The ideal candidate will have a firm understanding of basic principles of air-sea interaction, with significant education/experience in boundary layer physics and/or turbulence.  Additional experience in numerical modeling and data analysis preferred, including familiarity with Matlab computing software and programming languages such as Fortran, Python, C++, R, etc.  Applicants are expected to have excellent written and oral communication skills and organizational ability, and a demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications commensurate with experience.

Interested applicants that meet the requirements are encouraged to review the SMAST Code of Conduct and Diversity Statement (https://www.umassd.edu/media/umassdartmouth/smast/lab-pdf-files/SMAST-Code-of-Conduct-and-Diversity-Statement.pdf), then submit an application consisting of a letter of interest, CV, and contact information for at least three professional references to the following job posting: http://careers.umassd.edu/dartmouth/en-us/job/507289/postdoctoral-associate.

Initial appointment will be for up to 9 months.  Renewals will be contingent on performance and availability of funding.

Applicants must be authorized for employment in the U.S. on a full-time basis. Employment-based visa sponsorship not available.

Initial review of applications will begin February 2021 and will continue until the position is filled, with a target start date in Spring 2021.

To apply please submit a letter of interest, current resume and the contact information for three professional references.
