Berkeley Lab’s Climate & Ecosystems Division has an opening for an Earth Scientist.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct research on the statistical characterization, detection, and attribution of climate extremes, analysis of multi-model ensembles of climate experiments; and emulators and statistical models of climate change.
  • Co-lead the CASCADE (Calibrated and Systematic Characterization, Attribution, and Detection of Extremes) SFA (Scientific Focus Area) as its TCM (Technical Co-Manager).
  • Serve as a program-domain leader for climate and atmospheric processes for CESD (LBNL’s Climate and Ecosystem Sciences Division).
  • Produce consistent and high level of publications in peer-reviewed and high impact journals. Research may lead to patents, development of new codes.
  • Present findings at major conferences and workshops; may lead or organize conferences, and workshops.
  • Collaborate with and/or lead others in groups and forge/lead collaborations across the division, Area, Lab, and/or with external institutions.
  • Serve as project or group leader, be assisted by other scientists and engineers and support staff, have principal investigator status, and directly supervise other professionals, technical support staff, or students.
  • Prepare and present proposals and communicate directly with the funding agency. May participate on larger grants to grow new areas, programs or departments.
  • Oversee project budgets, project planning, proposal preparation, and program development.
  • Prepare reports, proposals, review documents, and presentations for sponsors.

What is Required:

  • Substantial research experience in the analysis of climate change, climate change projections and climate extremes as well as in applications of statistical extreme value analysis and uncertainty quantification.
  • Ph.D. and 10+ years of experience in atmospheric science, statistics applied to climate, physics, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead an independent research program.
  • Demonstrated record of innovation, impact, and originality.
  • Track record of scientific publication in high-quality journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish collaborations and interact with members of scientific groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to write grant proposals and attract support from funding agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.
  • Record of successful mentorship and supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written skills.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
