BSU’s Geology Department offers a vibrant and diverse program that educates future geoscientists and drives cutting-edge interdisciplinary research addressing some of Earth’s most pressing issues impacting humanity.  We explore, discover, innovate, and teach integrative and interdisciplinary geology courses, including hydrogeology, environmental geophysics, soils, mineralogy & petrology, sedimentology and stratigraphy, Physical & Historical Geology, glacial & Pleistocene geology, Planetary sciences. Our faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students are active in hydrogeology; mineralogy; geophysics; paleontology; geohazards & Natural disasters, volcanology, geology of American national parks and sedimentology and stratigraphy.

Responsibilities of the Assistant Professor of Geology include:

  • Teaching a mix of 24 credits per academic year at the undergraduate and graduate level.Courses may include courses in General Physical Sciences and Surface Geology: Sedimentation and Stratigraphy, Mineralogy and Petrology, Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Glacial and Pleistocene Geology, and Topics in Paleontology, which may include introductory and advanced courses in Environmental Sustainability, and other topics in the candidate's area of expertise.The primary purpose of this balanced teaching/research position is to teach introductory and advanced Geoscience courses that meet the curricular needs of the Program as well as University’s General Education requirements and support the Geology Minor.
  • Designing and delivering on-campus and/or online courses, as needed.
  • Promoting student development through advising and other activities.
  • Conducting a vigorous research program in Geological Sciences relevant to Northern Minnesota issues and supervising students.
  • Contributing to a collegial and supportive environment that advances the goals of the University.
  • Contributing to interdisciplinary teaching and involvement in activities that support BSU’s Shared Fundamental Values.

Minimum qualifications for this position include:

  • Earned Ph.D. degree in Geology (ABD will be considered) or allied field from an accredited program.
  • Experience teaching in both online and face-to-face settings.
  • Experience teaching in preferably 3 or more of the following courses in Surface Geology: Sedimentation and Stratigraphy, Mineralogy and Petrology, Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Glacial and Pleistocene Geology, and Topics in Paleontology, in a four-year Higher Education setting General Physical Sciences.
  • Ability to develop a research agenda that incorporates graduate and undergraduate students and connects to key relevant geological issues to Northern Minnesota.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Postdoctoral experience in Geology or allied field from an accredited program.
  • Industrial, governmental, or nonprofit experience in an environmental field, petroleum or mineral explorations, or geochemistry investigation is considered an asset.
  • Evidence of relevant teaching, mentoring students, and research experience, including peer reviewed publications.
  • Experience in field-based Sedimentary Geology, with a demonstrated potential for collaborative research incorporating innovative analytical, technological, and/or quantitative techniques.
  • Experience in field-based Geology, with a demonstrated potential for collaborative research incorporating innovative analytical, technological, and/or quantitative techniques.
  • Interest in recruiting and working with students from diverse backgrounds.
